SECOND GRADE GUIDELINES
Dear Parents,
The second grade team would like to welcome you and your child to a new school year. We look forward to having a productive year and want to make the transition from first grade as easy as possible. Therefore, we have devised the following guidelines for your child to follow. We encourage you to review these guidelines with your child and continue to be involved in every aspect of your child’s education. This support will allow us to provide the best possible learning environment for your child. Please sign and return once you have read the guidelines.
Thank you for your cooperation and support for the upcoming year.
Sincerely,
Second Grade Team
Attendance:
School is such an important part of your child’s life. Therefore, we encourage students to be present and on time. The school is open at 7:30. All students should arrive and be prepared to sit and read quietly in the cafeteria until 7:45. Students will proceed to their classrooms at this time. Your child is considered tardy at 8:10 and you must sign him/her in at the front desk. They will need a pass from the front office to enter the classroom. Announcements begin daily at 8:10 am.
If your child is absent, we ask that you call the front office and notify them of the absence. When the child returns to school, a note has to be sent by the parent/guardian stating the reason for absence and the dates the student missed school. You have two days to send a written note and/or e-mail a note to the teacher. Students have the number of days absent to make up any class work. Also, parents may call on the day of the absence and ask for work to be placed in the office for pick-up. Please give a reasonable amount of time for the teacher to get it ready.
Recess and Lunch:
Recess for second grade is at 10:55am daily. Lunch is at 11:25 a.m. School lunches cost $2.25. We encourage you to prepay for several lunches; weekly or monthly. Students that prepay, (cash or check), should pay in the cafeteria upon arrival at school. Please be sure to include the student’s identification number on the check. The student will input their ID number into the keypad and his/her account will be debited each time. Individual lunches may also be purchased with cash on a daily basis.
Students bringing lunch should bring items that may be thrown away or put back into his/her lunch kit and saved. Items can not be heated, cooked, or refrigerated in the cafeteria.
Birthdays:
Our campus does not allow for any food items to be brought to school to celebrate a child’s birthday. Party invitations may only be distributed if they are for each of the girls, each of the boys or the entire class.
Dress Code:
Please refer to the website at www.fortbendisd.com/about/dress.cfm, or to the parent handbook for specifics. Your child should be dressed appropriately and comfortably for the varied activities in each school day. With the requirements for daily physical activity, students are required to wear either rubber-soled shoes (tennis or athletic shoes) or bring a pair to wear during the activity. Flip flops are not allowed at school. All shoes must have a back on them. Please label coats, sweaters, jackets, or anything that is brought to school. Items of value should be left at home, including toys.
Water Bottles:
We encourage you to send a water bottle with your child, especially during the summer months. These will be kept on the student’s desks, and sent home each day for cleaning and refilling.
Library:
Each class will visit the library every other week to check out library books. Please help your child remember to return his/her books. Children will usually have the opportunity to exchange a library book at some time during the school day but not every day.
Tuesday Folders: In addition to daily folders your child will be bringing home a Tuesday Folder. It will contain all graded papers for the week and a sheet to sign. Please look over all class work with your child and have him/her correct any errors. This will help review any concepts taught in class and will continue to keep you involved in your child’s learning.
Daily Folder:
Your child will bring home a folder every day. Please check that your child returns it to school on a daily basis. A conduct calendar will be placed in the folder. Please be sure to initial the conduct calendar daily to ensure open communication between teacher and parent. Occasionally, other information may be included.
Medication:
All medications, including cough drops and Chap Stick, must be kept in the nurse’s office and must be in the original container. A note with the name of the medicine, the child’s name, and directions for dosage should accompany the medication.
Visitation:
Parents should check in at the main office upon arrival. A one time swipe of your license, or pictured i.d., into our raptor system, will keep you on file and able to print out your name tag each time you come in. If you wish to speak at length with the teacher, please make an appointment for a conference. The school number is 281-634-4160.
Volunteers:
We are always looking for parents who have some extra time to help with various class activities, school activities and teacher needs. If you would like to volunteer for your child’s class room, please contact your child’s teacher to set up times and dates.
Field Trips:
If you would like to be a chaperone or attend the field trip with your child this year, please visit the school website and complete a background check. Do this NOW so when the time comes you’ll be ready. Everyone needs to update their information annually.
